Strengths: Every sunscreen offers sufficient UVA protection; some extraordinary foundations, some of which include sunscreen; the liquid concealer; very good loose powder, and powder eyeshadows; some great mascaras; brow gel; elegant creamy lipsticks and several good lip glosses.

Weaknesses: Expensive; lackluster moisturizers and serums that contain more fragrance and preservatives than elegant ingredients; irritating toners and self-tanners; ordinary masks; lack of products to address the needs of those with blemishes or skin discolorations; some foundations with SPF ratings that are too low; mostly average makeup brushes.

If you’re looking for a clear-cut case of style winning out over substance, here it is. The Dior name is synonymous with couture fashion and countless other lifestyle accoutrements, but they continue to falter when it comes to establishing a first-rate collection of skin-care products. Of course, the company believes their products are the crème de la crème and if we’re judging on aesthetics alone, it is seen what they mean. However, what’s inside the gorgeous components is what counts for your skin, and Dior’s formulas leave a lot to be desired. On one hand, it’s great that all of their sunscreens contain sufficient UVA protection; on the other, all of their moisturizers either leave skin wanting more or contain problematic ingredients with no skin-redeeming qualities.

Dior’s Products Ranked Best Makeup

Always fashion-forward, Dior’s makeup is more well-designed and attractive than ever, offering standout products in almost every category. The most notable change over the past several years has been Dior’s improved foundation formulas and shades. It’s now the exception rather than the rule to find overtly peach, pink, or rose-toned shades among Dior’s many complexion-enhancing options. Even better, Dior has recently introduced foundations to compensate for its previous too-low SPF efforts, with formulas available in SPF 15, 20 and 25, a couple of which even include UVA-protecting ingredients. Such a move shows that while Dior may still struggle with an overall lackluster skin care line, they are at least working to meet dermatologist-recommended benchmarks for sun protection.

You will also be very impressed with Dior’s powder blush, eye shadows (though their shiny finish is not the best for Baby Boomer eyes), the DiorSkin concealer, brow gel, and most of the mascaras. If you’re a fan of lip gloss and are willing to tolerate a double-digit price, you’ll be in cosmetics heaven wading through all the lip-shining options here. On the flip side, neither the standard pencils nor most of the lipsticks are worth the money. With any designer-based line built on artifice, price is more than a matter of dollars. It’s indicative of a company’s image and remains a prestige factor that often speaks louder than the products themselves. Dior is guilty of maximizing its assets to play up its image, but with their makeup line the good news for you is that, for the most part, they really pay attention to what’s inside all the luxe containers, too.

One more note: Dior’s makeup tester units are much more accessible and user-friendly than for previous editions of this book. It is also found their counter staff to be more accommodating and definitely less condescending than several other European-bred lines.

Note: Dior is categorized as a brand that tests on animals because its products are sold in China. Although Dior does not conduct animal testing for its products sold elsewhere, the Chinese government requires imported cosmetics be tested on animals, so foreign companies retailing there must comply. This requirement is why some brands state that they don’t test on animals “unless required by law.” Animal rights organizations consider cosmetic companies retailed in China to be brands that test on animals and so does the Paula’s Choice Research Team.

5-Couleur Eyeshadow Palette

5-Couleur Eyeshadow Palette5-Couleur Eye shadow Palette represents Dior’s classic eye shadow offering and has been around almost from this line’s inception. The texture of these is like powdered sugar and the fragrance-free, talc-based formula doesn’t crease.

Each shade applies very smoothly, doesn’t flake, and provides more coverage (and definitely has a stronger color payoff) than most powder eye shadows. You can truly be an “artiste” with these shadows and a good set of eyeshadow brushes—and most sets have a color dark enough to work as powder eyeliner, not to mention these shadows work wet or dry.

The ongoing problem is Dior’s often contrasting or overly trendy color combinations. Sadly, these tend to outnumber the workable sets, though there are some worth considering.

These shadows are predominantly shiny, but if that’s your thing, the shine in many sets is on the soft side and clings beautifully. It’s still too shiny for wrinkled or drooping eyelids, but younger women with the means to afford these eyeshadow sets will be impressed.

Note: the tiny applicators that come with each set should be discarded in favor of full-size professional brushes. As nicely as Dior’s shadows go on, the sponge tip applicators all but guarantee a choppy, messy-looking eye design whereas brushes work better (and faster).

Ultra Shimmering All Over Face Powder

Ultra Shimmering All Over Face PowderUltra Shimmering All Over Face Powder houses five high-shine, silky pressed powders in one compact with no dividers. This product is similar to (but better than) Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick Compact, but Dior’s version applies much more smoothly and does not flake. The shimmer particles are very finely milled and cling to skin or makeup without migrating.

Two sets of complementary shades are available, one with cool tones, the other with warm tones. Both are appropriate for light to dark skin, although on dark skin tones the shimmer may be more apparent than the sheer color.

This fragrance-free shimmer powder is best for normal to slightly dry or slightly oily skin. As with any high-shine product, this powder will emphasize the size of large pores and make any rough skin more apparent.

Note: This powder also works well as eyeshadow.

Pros:

  • Silky pressed powder applies well and blends evenly.
  • Shimmer particles don’t flake or migrate.
  • Can also be used as eyeshadow.
  • Fragrance-free.

Cons:

Diorshow Iconic Mascara

Diorshow Iconic MascaraFashion trends, fashion designers, and red-carpet celebrities play a big role in selling this mascara (as they do for many cosmetics and other objects of desire). That’s where the Iconic name comes from, along with this mascara’s backstage legacy of creating outrageously long, curved lashes.

The unique rubber-bristled brush does a fantastic job of extending and curling every last lash, all without clumps. This doesn’t build the wow-factor thickness of the original Diorshow Mascara, but has a cleaner, more precise application that refuses to falter (and gets incrementally better) with successive coats.

DiorSkin Ultra Shimmering All Over Face Powder

Ultra Shimmering All Over Face PowderThis pressed shimmer powder is an ideal find for those who want a soft, glowing sheen rather than “look at me!” sparkles. The super-smooth texture makes it a joy to apply, and it blends evenly to a finish that’s tailor-made for highlighting skin. The multiple tones in this powder are best swirled together with your brush so they come off as one uniform shade on skin.

1-Couleur Eyeshadow

1-Couleur Eyeshadow1-Couleur Eyeshadow has an enviably silky, almost creamy texture. The application is excellent, as is the color saturation, making these single shadows a pleasure to work with. The drawback for those with wrinkles is the amount of shine. If wrinkles aren’t a concern and you want shine, there are some attractive shades to consider.

RougeLiner Automatic Lip Liner

RougeLiner Automatic Lip LinerObviously, this lip pencil is expensive. However, it never needs sharpening, is retractable, and has a beautifully smooth application. Another strong point is how long-lasting the color is: some of the shades have such a strong stain they take considerable effort to remove! It is definitely an excellent lip pencil to consider if you don’t mind spending this much.

DiorShow Waterproof Mascara

DiorShow Waterproof MascaraDiorShow Waterproof Mascara is Dior’s best waterproof mascara to date. Although the brush is enormous and can be difficult to work with, you will find it produces copious length and respectable thickness without clumps or smears. The formula is tenaciously waterproof, but easier than most to remove, making this highly recommended if your mascara budget extends to Dior’s price point.

Dior’s Products Ranked Best – DiorBlush

DiorBlushYou will not be disappointed with the sublime texture and application of DiorBlush. In a word, it is superlative, and most of the available colors are excellent, with several soft choices that apply evenly. Each shade is infused with shine, but it’s not too intrusive. This blush has that extra something that pushes it above and beyond the best.

DiorSkin Sculpt Lifting Smoothing Concealer

DiorSkin Sculpt Lifting Smoothing ConcealerDiorSkin Sculpt Lifting Smoothing Concealer has a price that should give you pause, but there’s no denying that this is a formidable concealer that is worthy of your attention. The silky, silicone-enhanced formula begins slightly thick, but blends very well. It has minimal slip, so it does a great job of staying precisely where you place it, drying to a satin matte finish that provides significant coverage.

Dark circles and redness are easily erased, but this concealer never looks too thick and it creases only minimally. It comes in three superb shades, though only for fair to medium skin tones. Forget about the sculpting and lifting claims because they are mere fantasy, but the rest is as real as it gets.

Dior’s Products Ranked Best – Liquid Eyeliner

Liquid EyelinerThis liquid eyeliner pen is brilliantly designed to offer precision and ease of use. The calligraphy-style fine-tip applicator evenly dispenses product through the soft, flexible brush hairs. Because the hairs taper to a fine point, the result is meticulous detailing, but you also can apply more pressure to fan the brush and make a thicker line. The product dries quickly and stays put all day, without flaking or smearing. Liquid Eyeliner is offered in Black and Brown, both of which can be made more dramatic by applying successive layers.
