But while UV is year-round, it’s summer when frames become a daily essential. Unless, of course, you’re fine with permanently squinting.
Sunglasses are not just a style statement – they can attract or repel, be a mirror or a shield. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then perfectly suited sunglasses aptly deserve to be called ‘shades’.
But the business of selecting a pair is equally shady. The range of styles available these days is dizzyingly diverse, and that’s before factoring in variables such as materials, colour and budget. Before breaking out into a sweat, use this guide to shed some light on the process.

In the hunt for the perfect pair of sunglasses, it’s essential to first identify the frames that complement your face shape. While a handful of guys will be able to wear any they like, some will be completely off-limits.
Oval Face Shape
Aviators, Clubmasters or wayfarers; heavy rims or none – anything goes. The only advice for oval face shapes is to refrain from oversized novelty frames, as they do no one any favours.
Round Face Shape
Guys with an undefined jaw and roughly equal face width and length should avoid curved shapes. The goggles of the 1980s illustrate this beautifully. It’s OK to embrace a thicker, fuller frame that’s on-trend, but you should be prepared to look back in 10 years’ time with a cringe.

The original thick-framed wayfarers should – strictly speaking – be bought from only one brand: Ray-Ban. That said, these days the American firm’s instantly recognisable icon can be found in various guises (often labelled ‘D-Frame’ sunglasses) and at every price point, from high-end to the high street.
Typically, this style comes in two sizes (regular or oversized), so it’s wise to try before you buy to secure the perfect fit. While you’re there, consider lesser worn examples such as those with reflective or coloured lenses to give this timeless silhouette a contemporary twist.
The wayfarer considered to be to sunglasses what the 501 is to denim; the ultimate badge of cool and a modern icon that transcends trends and eras. However, the popular frames – recognizable by their clean lines; and subtle curves – have spent more than their fair share in fashion no man’s land.
In the 1970s, just 20 years after first being introduced, wayfarers had all but disappeared; and the style verged on discontinuation. Luckily, a decade later Ray-Ban signed a deal to have them show up in numerous films; such as The Breakfast Club (1985), re-establishing their popularity; and making them a regular fixture on noses! (particularly those with oval, long or round faces) ever since.
“You only have to look at the diversity of people the wayfarer has appeared on; from Bob Dylan to Jude Law via Andy Warhol and Robert Pattinson; to understand their versatility,” says MatchesFashion men’s style director Simon Chilvers.
“The simplicity but distinctiveness of the frames; coupled with their lack of anything particularly tricky in terms of finish; Are part of what has given them style longevity. And the fact they pretty much go with anything is, naturally, a bonus.

Despite being more widely being referred to as the Cubmaster; the half-rimmed shape worn by Malcolm X and Lyndon Johnson was known as the ‘browline’ when it was introduced in the 1940s.

The design became the most common of all throughout the 1950s and early 1960s; likely owing to the fact they suit a range of men; including those with oval, heart, round and square face shapes; and are still one of the most popular.
“The Clubmaster has been a key part of our eyewear buy for years,” says Selfridges buying manager Richard Jones. “[It’s] a sophisticated twist on the more casual wayfarer. Pair with a great suit, or a shirt and shorts combo and you’re guaranteed to look sharp.”
For a next-level styling move; Jones also suggests matching the metals on pieces; like a watch or tie bar with the colour of the metal accents on the glasses.

Getting over round frames’ association with Harry Potter and Where’s Wally is harder than finding a high-quality pair. But the circular shape also has a long list of stylish wearers; from Johnny Depp and Samuel L Jackson to Nick Wooster and Stanley Tucci.

Square Frames – Finding The Perfect Sunglasses
Anything worn by Michael Caine and Jack Nicholson in the 1950s and 1960s; gets a resounding thumbs up in the style stakes. Take square frames, for example, the perfect antidote to rounder faces; the structured style helps give the illusion of strong cheekbones and a chiselled jawline.
The term ‘square’ can refer to a range of shapes, but typically they look best in dark tortoiseshell; with sleek details such as a brow bar and keyhole bridges.
One man who knows all too well what sunglasses can do for a face (or indeed, a career) is Elton John. The British singer thought to have the largest personal collection in the world; with around 20,000 whacky pairs.
While we could never endorse owning that many – or novelty styles at all – on dress-down days, the Rocket Man does well to use square-shaped frames to balance out his round features. A similar trick used by Michael Caine and Jack Nicholson in the 1950s and 1960s.

To keep the old-school appeal alive, Tom Courcey, deputy editor at online menswear retailer The Idle Man, advises opting for a look that channels the French Riviera. “A pair in tortoiseshell teamed with a crisp white polo shirt and beige chinos, topped off with a pair of summer loafers, is the perfect smart summer look.”
